Fresno, CA - Celebrate with us the 25th anniversary of Guelaguetza Fresno! The Guelaguetza, which in Zapotec means offering, is an event that represents the best cultural expression of the Indigenous communities from the State of Oaxaca. The goal of this festivity is to share and transmit the Indigenous culture to the new generations and to share our millenary festivity with the general population. We are honored to cordially invite the diverse communities in Fresno and the region to join us and share a piece of our cultural wealth.Â

This year, we are going to witness the performances of Ballet Folklórico Huaxyacac, Grupo Folklórico Nueva Antequera, Grupo Folklórico el Valle de Santa Helena, Danza de los Diablos Mixtecos Unidos, Danza de los Rubios de Llano Verde and more. The sones and chilenas, traditional music, are going to be performed by the Maqueos Band, Brillo de San Miguel Cuevas Band and traditional music with Violin and Jarana.Â

Event participants will be able to enjoy a day of diverse traditional Oaxaca foods and visit handcraft vendors throughout the day. We will also have different local organizations present to distribute information about the services and resources they offer to the community. Health Justice Initiative - Bridging Barriers in Fresno Rural Areas

Fresno, CAÂ - During the month of August, the CBDIO health disparities program completed outreach efforts in rural communities of Fresno County with the Rural Mobile Health clinic. The events took place in Huron, Coalinga, and Caruthers. There was not much engagement from community members due to the heat, work schedules, and because many people are taking precautions when going out due to the possible presence of immigration enforcement in the community. In total, across the three events, 133 community members were reached. They received information about health education, food boxes, and were able to get basic medical checkups with the healthcare providers present at the event. All of them received information about the health program and had the opportunity to access the mobile clinic for basic health screenings such as blood pressure, checking blood glucose levels, diabetes screening, among others. The health disparities team continued to reach rural areas of Fresno County, strengthening community connections and supporting access to resources.
For Dignity and Rights: Empowering Workers in the Central Valley

Madera, CA - Since the creation of the Labor Justice program began back in 2021, we have witnessed one of the most serious problems facing agricultural workers: wage theft. This sadly common injustice directly affects the lives and dignity of those who sustain our region's agricultural production with their efforts. Â
One of the priorities of the Labor Justice team has been to strengthen the leadership of the workers themselves. Some workers have taken an active role in sharing information through radio and within their communities on how to recognize and report wage theft. This collective effort has enabled more workers to feel prepared to demand what is rightfully theirs from their employers. Â
On August 2025, the Madera team supported 12 workers in demanding their unpaid wages. With the support of CBDIO, through advocacy and accompaniment before the Labor Commissioner's Office, three of the workers recovered a total of $4,600.00 that had been owed to them for several months. Â
Each case resolved is a step toward justice and dignity. For us, there is no greater satisfaction than seeing workers happy to receive what is rightfully theirs.Â
VeꞋe TùꞋun Afterschool program at Santa Rita Elementary School

Salinas, CA - The month of August was a time of preparation and organization for the VeꞋe TuꞋùn Program team in Santa Rita. During this period, intensive work was carried out with parents to verify their children's school information, with the goal of ensuring a strong start to the 2025–2026 school year. Collaboration with Right At School (RAS) was also strengthened, allowing for coordinated logistics regarding snack time, dinner, and student pick-up. At the same time, the team dedicated effort to preparing materials and getting to know the site staff, laying a solid foundation for the new school year.

One of the most important moments of the month was Back to School Night, held on August 28. During this event, the VeꞋe TuꞋùn team provided interpretation services for the entire audience, highlighting the participation of team member Adrián Reyes, who interpreted in Mixteco, Spanish, and English in front of the community. Once parents went to the classrooms, each team member was strategically positioned to support communication between Mixtec families and teachers, responding to the need for interpretation in various spaces.

This effort was made possible thanks to the support of McKinnon’s coordinator, Daniela Maldonado, and her team, along with the Santa Rita team, who facilitated interpretation for more than five variants of Mixteco spoken at the school. The variants present include: San MartÃn Peras, Cochoapa el Grande, Guerrero, Metlatónoc, Guerrero, San Miguel el Grande, Guerrero, and Tierra Blanquita, Guerrero. Additionally, the occasion was used to share information about the services offered by CBDIO, as well as to present the Veêž‹e TuꞋùn program and encourage more families to join.
VeꞋe TùꞋun Afterschool program at McKinnon Elementary School
Salinas, CA - The month of August was a period full of learning, adaptation, and new experiences for the CBDIO team at McKinnon Elementary School. Site coordinator Daniela Maldonado, together with the team from Santa Rita, worked collaboratively to launch the Ve’e Tu’un program and successfully present it during the Back to School Night event.
Throughout the month, the CBDIO staff assigned to McKinnon had the opportunity to become familiar with the school environment, meet the teaching and administrative staff, and begin phone outreach to families. The main goal was to raise awareness about the program, share the available resources, and support the enrollment process for students interested in learning Mixteco.
One of the most significant achievements was the successful execution of the Back to School Night event. It was gratifying to see collaborative work in action, especially with the valuable support of the Santa Rita team, who joined and assisted in several key areas of the event. Some team members managed the resource table, while others provided interpretation services, childcare, and program presentations.
Although attendance from Mixtec families was limited as the program is still new at McKinnon, it was very encouraging to have parents from other communities participate and express a strong interest in having their children learn Mixteco. This enthusiasm fills us with hope and reaffirms our commitment to cultural and linguistic preservation.

De Preparación a Celebración
We would like to congratulate Mr. Manuel Guillen Cervantes for achieving his goal of becoming a citizen of the United States of America in the month of August. He explained that our interview preparation significantly boosted his confidence and familiarity with the process. Also, Mr. Guillen mentioned that having an idea of what to expect in his naturalization interview allowed him to be at ease. He was very happy and grateful to the CBDIO staff for their support during this process that led him to successfully obtain his citizenship.
Once Mr. Guillen obtained his naturalization certificate; we helped him register to vote and obtain his U.S. passport.
IMMIGRATION WORKSHOP IN MADERA
On August 15, 2025, we organized a successful immigration event at our Madera office, where we provided assistance with citizenship evaluations, permanent residence renewals, DACA renewals, information on Know Your Rights, and general consultations with attorneys Olga Grosh and Armida Mendoza. We also had the support of CVIIC staff during this event, and we served 49 people from the community who needed these immigration services.

De puerta en puerta: Dando información en nuestras comunidades sobre el plan de preparación para emergencias familiares

Fresno, CA - Durante el mes de agosto, el programa de salud de CBDIO de Fresno llevó a cabo esfuerzos de alcance comunitario en comunidades rurales del Condado de Fresno asistiendo a eventos de la comunidad con la ClÃnica Rural de Salud Móvil. Los eventos se realizaron en Huron, Coalinga y Caruthers. La participación de los miembros de la comunidad fue limitada debido al calor, los horarios de trabajo y porque muchas personas están tomando precauciones al salir debido a la posible presencia de autoridades de inmigración en la comunidad.

En total, en los tres eventos, se alcanzó a 133 miembros de la comunidad. Ellos recibieron información sobre educación de salud, cajas de alimentos, y pudieron hacerse chequeos médicos básicos con los proveedores de salud presentes en el evento. Todos recibieron información sobre el programa de salud y tuvieron la oportunidad de obtener exámenes básicos de salud, como chequeo de presión arterial y niveles de glucosa en la sangre, detección de diabetes, entre otros.

El equipo de salud continuó haciendo esfuerzos de alcance en las áreas rurales del Condado de Fresno, fortaleciendo las conexiones comunitarias y apoyando el acceso a recursos.
Por la Dignidad y los Derechos: Empoderando a Trabajadores del Valle Central

Madera, CA - Desde el inicio del programa de Justicia Laboral en 2021, hemos sido testigos de uno de los problemas más graves que enfrentan los trabajadores agrÃcolas: el robo de salario. Esta injusticia, tristemente común, afecta directamente a la vida y dignidad de quienes sostienen con su esfuerzo la producción agrÃcola de nuestra región. Â
Una de las prioridades del equipo de Justicia Laboral ha sido fortalecer el liderazgo de los propios trabajadores. Algunos trabajadores han tomado un papel activo compartiendo información a través de radio y dentro de sus comunidades sobre cómo reconocer y denunciar el robo de salario. Este esfuerzo colectivo ha permitido que más trabajadores se sientan preparados en exigir a sus empleadores lo que justamente les corresponde.Â

En agosto de 2025, el equipo de Madera apoyó a 12 trabajadores a exigir sus sueldos no pagados. Con el respaldo de CBDIO, a través de la abogacÃa y el acompañamiento antes la agencia del Oficina del Comisionado Laboral, tres de los trabajadores recuperaron un total de $4,600.00 que se les debÃa hace varios meses atrás. Â
Cada caso resuelto es un paso hacia la justicia y dignidad. Para nosotros, no hay mayor satisfacción grande que ver a los trabajadores felices al recibir lo que es justo de su salario.
Ve’e Tu’un Programa Después de Escuela en Santa Rita Elementary SchoolÂ

Salinas, CA - El mes de agosto fue un tiempo de preparación y organización para el equipo del Programa Veêž‹e TuꞋùn en Santa Rita. Durante este periodo se trabajó intensamente con los padres de familia en la verificación de datos escolares de sus hijos, con el objetivo de asegurar un buen inicio del ciclo 2025–2026. También se fortaleció la colaboración con Right At School (RAS), lo que permitió coordinar la logÃstica de los estudiantes en los horarios de snack, cena y recogida. Al mismo tiempo, el equipo dedicó esfuerzo a la preparación de materiales y a conocer al personal del sitio, sentando bases sólidas para arrancar el nuevo año escolar.
Uno de los momentos más importantes del mes fue la Noche de Regreso a Clases (Back to School Night), celebrada el 28 de agosto. Durante este evento, el equipo de VeꞋe TuꞋùn brindó servicios de interpretación para toda la audiencia, destacando la participación del compañero Adrián Reyes, quien interpretó en mixteco, español e inglés frente a la comunidad. Una vez que los padres se dirigieron a los salones, cada integrante del equipo se ubicó estratégicamente para apoyar la comunicación entre familias mixtecas y maestros, respondiendo a la necesidad de interpretación en distintos espacios.
Este esfuerzo fue posible gracias al acompañamiento de la coordinadora de McKinnon, Daniela Maldonado, y su equipo, junto con el equipo de Santa Rita, quienes facilitaron la interpretación de más de cinco variantes del mixteco presentes en la escuela.Los variantes presentes son, San MartÃn Peras, Cochoapa el Grande Guerrero, Metlatonoc Guerrero, San Miguel el Grande Guerrero, Tierra Blanquita Guerrero. Además, se aprovechó la ocasión para dar a conocer los servicios que ofrece CBDIO, asà como para presentar el programa Veêž‹e TuꞋùn y motivar a más familias a unirse.
Al finalizar agosto, el equipo de Santa Rita celebró un logro significativo: la inscripción de más de 50 estudiantes al programa. Con entusiasmo y compromiso, quedaron listos para iniciar oficialmente el 2 de septiembre, preparados para ofrecer un año lleno de actividades culturales, recreativas y extracurriculares para todos los niños participantes.
Programa Ve’e Tu’un Después de Escuela en McKinnon Elementary School
Salinas, CA - El mes de agosto fue un periodo lleno de aprendizajes, adaptación y nuevas experiencias para el equipo de CBDIO en la escuela McKinnon. La coordinadora del sitio, Daniela Maldonado, junto con el equipo de Santa Rita, trabajaron en conjunto para dar inicio al programa Ve’e Tu’un y presentarlo exitosamente durante el evento de Back to School Night.

Durante este mes, el personal de CBDIO asignado a McKinnon tuvo la oportunidad de familiarizarse con el entorno escolar, conocer al personal docente y administrativo, y comenzar el alcance telefónico a las familias. El objetivo principal fue dar a conocer el programa, los recursos disponibles y apoyar en el proceso de inscripción de los estudiantes interesados en aprender Mixteco.

Uno de los logros más significativos fue la exitosa realización del evento Back to School Night. Fue muy gratificante ver el trabajo colaborativo en acción, especialmente con el valioso respaldo del equipo de Santa Rita, quienes acompañaron y apoyaron en distintas áreas clave del evento. Algunos compañeros estuvieron a cargo de la mesa de recursos, otros ofrecieron servicios de interpretación, cuidado infantil y presentación del programa.
A pesar de que la asistencia de familias Mixtecas fue limitada, debido a que el programa aún es nuevo en McKinnon, fue muy alentador contar con la participación de padres de otras comunidades que expresaron un fuerte interés en que sus hijos aprendan Mixteco. Este entusiasmo nos llena de esperanza y reafirma nuestro compromiso con la preservación cultural y lingüÃstica.

De Preparación a Celebración
En este mes de Agosto del 2025 queremos felicitar al Sr Manuel Guillen Cervantes, que se convirtió en ciudadano de los Estados Unidos de América. Nos menciona que, al haberlo preparado para la entrevista, le ayudó mucho, ya que al tener una idea de lo que le esperaba, pudo afrontar la situación con más tranquilidad y seguridad. Está muy feliz y agradecido con el personal de CBDIO por la ayuda recibida durante el proceso que lo llevó a completar con éxito la entrevista.
Una vez que obtuvo su certificado de naturalización, le ayudamos a registrarse para votar y obtener su pasaporte americano.
TALLER DE INMIGRACION EN MADERA
El pasado 15 de agosto de 2025, organizamos un evento de inmigración en nuestra oficina de Madera que fue un éxito, donde se ayudó con evaluaciones para la ciudadanÃa, renovación de residencia permanente, renovación de DACA, información de conoce tus derechos, y consultas generales con las abogadas Olga Grosh y Armida Mendoza. Además contamos con el apoyo del personal de CVIIC, durante este evento, atendimos a 49 personas de la comunidad que ocupaban estos servicios de inmigración.
